Twelve
people have now perished in fires in 2008 in the city
of
Portsmouth.
Four people died in an early morning blaze at
1557 Fourth
Street
Friday.
Portsmouth Fire
Chief Bill Raison said the fire was called
in by a Portsmouth
Police Officer.
"Around 3:30 this morning a Portsmouth Police
Officer on
routine patrol
smelled smoke, got out of his cruiser, and
began walking
around to attempt to locate the fire," Raison said.
"When a window
broke out of the house, he called in the location."
Raison
said firefighters found the interior of the house totally
involved in
flames when they
arrived.
"Two (bodies) were found upstairs and two
downstairs, and
they were taken to
Southern Ohio Medical Center by EMT's,"
Raison
said.
