Goodbye to childhood memories.
The Portsmouth High School building has been here all of
our lives and I graduated from that intuition in 1951 when our city
was a kinder and a more peaceful place for a child to grow into
adulthood. I remember when I came back from Korea, when I walked
home from the old C&O railroad station in Kentucky, I really
knew I was home at last by just seeing that building once again.
I would like to see that building preserved to remember
my childhood and fond memories, but I also know that it would be
very expensive to retrofit to modern standards. Let’s face it, the
building is as dingy as our present city building and both are very
expensive to heat and cool because of antiquated engineering in such
structures.
Portsmouth is so fortunate to be host of a State
University and now have a new middle and high school for the next
generations that I think it is only fitting that we also have a
brand new city building to complement our city as a show place to
attract new business and industry. Also to present to the whole
world that we are not a backwoods introverted dying river town, but
a progressive city working hard to enrich lives and meaning for all
of our citizens and contribute to mankind itself. Sort of like
buying yourself new clothes to make a better appearance and to feel
better about yourself inside.
I hope when you read my thoughts, that you consider my
proposal with this matter and please remember our future generations
like our forefathers did for us. And, just maybe a smart grant
writer can procure the major funds for us. Jan Braughton is a
past superintendent of mine that I have the utmost respect for and
I'm sure she has shown her concern for our city last Monday evening.
I do hope that the closed-mindedness of three of our council
members will re-consider holding on to the substandard Martings
building for city hall. It to, is too obsolete.

Subject: Ignorance Breeds Contempt
IGNORANCE BRINGS CONTEMPT.
THE ELECTED OFFICIALS MAY HAVE PREVENTED THE CITIZENS OF
PORTSMOUTH AND SCIOTO COUNTY FROM SPENDING A LOT OF TAX DOLLARS IF
THEY WOULD JUST COMMUNICATE WITH THE TAX PAYING, VOTING PUBLIC.
IF THE MAYOR WOULD KEEP A DAILY LOG OF HIS EVERY ACTION AND
PUBLISHED IT WEEKLY, IT WOULD KEEP HIM HONEST AND THE PUBLIC
INFORMED. LIKEWISE EVERY MEMBER OF CITY COUNCIL..
THAT WAY A NON QUORUM WOULDN'T BE TRYING TO MAKE SECRET DEALS
WITH SHADY ATTORNEY'S AND GREEDY BUSINESS MEN.THE SAME CHECK AND
BALANCE WOULD APPLY TO THE COUNTY COMMISSIONER'S WAS WELL. I WANT TO
POINT OUT AN EXAMPLE OF ONE POWER HUNGRY LADY THAT HAS ALREADY
STATED THAT WE SHALL HAVE THE MARTINGS BUILDING OR ELSE.THAT KIND OF
ARROGANCE MUST NOT BE ALLOWED. THE CITY CHARTER SHOULD COVER THIS
KIND OF BULLYING OF THE CONSTITUENTS.
EVERYONE BY NOW KNOWS ABOUT THE COUNTY TRYING TO CONVERT AN OLD
SCHOOL TO A JAIL AND HOW THE CITIZEN'S REBELLED AND THE PRESENT
COMMISSIONERS WASTED HUNDRED OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FOR NOTHING AND
STILL VOTED TO INCREASE OUR SALES TAX. IF THEY HAD POSTED THEIR
INTENT THERE WOULD NOT BE A SERIOUS REASON TO CONSIDER WHO YOU VOTE
FOR NEXT ELECTION.
HOW MANY OF REMEMBER WHEN A NO-QUALIFIED COMMISSIONER SAID THAT
THE OLD RAILROAD DEPOT WASN'T WORTH SAVING AND THE OTHER TWO CHIMED
IN WITH HIM TO TEAR IT DOWN ?
BUT KEEPING THE VOTERS IGNORANT UNTIL AFTER THE FACT CAUSES
CONTEMPT AND CONTEMPT BREEDS VIOLENCE, IF IT GOES TOO FAR.
ALL GOVERNMENT NEEDS CHECK'S AND BALANCE FOR SUCCESS AND IF IT
DOESN'T IT WILL LEAD TO ANARCHY IN THE EXTREME.
THE BEST FORM OF GOVERNMENT IS TO HAVE A BENEVOLENT KING, BUT
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE KING DIES ?THE POINT I'M TRYING TO MAKE IS
THIS. WHICH IS MORE IMPORTANT, TO HAVE AN ELECTED OFFICIAL THAT DOES
PERSONAL FAVORS FOR YOU, OR A PERSON THAT ALWAYS MAKES DECISIONS
THAT ARE BEST FOR THE SURVIVAL OF ALL AND FUTURE GENERATIONS
?
AT CITY HALL OUR NEW MAYOR JIM KALB HAS MADE A FEW MISTAKES AND
THAT'S TO BE EXPECTED. IF HE HAS LEARNED THAT YOU MUST KEEP A LEVEL
PLAYING FIELD FOR ALL, THEN I CAN ACCEPT HIS REMAINING TIME IN
OFFICE. IF NOT, HE MAY BE WITHOUT A JOB WITHIN SIXTEEN
MONTH'S.
