PRODUCER LEE SCOTT OF
THE COLUMBIA MUSIC ARENA
AND PUBLISHER MICHAEL MESSERLY OF THE PORTSMOUTH DAILY TIMES
By Austin Leedom, Shawnee Sentinel Writer
On Monday evening about 5:40 p.m. May the 14th 2012 I
talked with Portsmouth Daily Times Publisher (PDT) Michael Messerly at City
Hall prior to the Council Meeting; the Publisher was
concerned that I had
written that Lee Scott had claimed that Mr. Messerly had made an appointment
with him and failed to keep the appointment and Lee Scott considered that
Michael Messerly
had lied to him when he failed to keep the appointment.
Publisher Messerly said he had viewed the appointment as having an
indefinite, flexible time.
He said he did later go to see Mr. Scott at
the Columbia Music Arena and offered him advertising
at the lowest possible
rate, but Mr. Scott was unhappy with him and not interested in buying
any
advertisement.
As Publisher Messerly was talking with me near the East door of
City Hall, City Councilman
Jim Kalb, now also Manager at the Columbia, was
passing by on his way into the city building
and he verified Mr. Messerly and
Mr. Scott had been talking together at the Columbia.
The publisher said he offered Lee Scott the very lowest rate for
advertising. He indicated
that was the
best he could do, that they do not give anyone free space in the paper.
I didn’t reply to that claim, told Mr. Messerly I would write and
publish his side of the
story and we parted.
I could have spoken at length about the PDT tradition of full-page
giveaway space and
hundreds of fluff articles in the PDT for many of the local criminal
controllers of this city,
but there was no time then to begin Mr. Messerly’s
real education of Portsmouth and
the situation he is now in.
Mr. Messerly, an unusually good newsman, went to the Columbia to
meet with Lee Scott
without checking the very unusual facts on Mr. Scott and
the Columbia; he didn’t learn
that Lee Scott had bought the Columbia when it
was only a pile of rubble lying on the ground
on Gallia Street between two buildings
that had been maintained.
The Columbia building was a theatre when Lee Scott was a boy. He loved
the building and the theatre.
About twelve years ago super-wealthy real estates predators were
trying to buy
the old building; they, it seems, couldn’t get the old Columbia
building as the
owner was an elderly lady who also loved her old building and did
not want the
predators to have it just to bulldoze the rubble into trucks and
haul it off. She
would not sell the Columbia to the developers at any price. She knew Lee Scott;
he had been a true customer
most of his life when he was a very young boy growing
up in the streets of Portsmouth. He had seen nearly all the shows; it is not
known
to me that he ever bought a ticket, but he would get in to see the shows.
Now grown up,
Lee wanted the Columbia
and he bought the Columbia from the lady with one dollar
and a promise to
re-build it to its previous glory.
Lee Scott, and his son, Eddie, seriously went to work. Almost instantly,
the developers
and their controlled friends were enemies of Lee Scott and they
warred against him for
over five years by creating work stoppages by city
inspectors for non-existent construction errors.
Mayor Greg Bauer was a powerful enemy. Rejects of construction plans were a
holdup
at every phase of the building projects.
Lee Scott then procured plans from the
State of Ohio and the State
Inspector was in charge of over-seeing the work which then
went rather rapidly. Mayor Greg Bauer persisted in harassing Lee
Scott; and then Lee
and his friends organized a recall action and removed the
Mayor from office by a
powerful vote against Bauer.
Police harassment by Chief Charles Horner who had mobbed up with
Clay Johnson
and his SOGP Gang in the early part of 2005 was severe; tickets were written on the
slightest violations, such as one of the Scott vehicles being parked 13 inches from the
curb instead of the 12
inches legal limit. Police Chief Charles Horner was a tyrant and abused people under color of the law. He was known to many, many citizens as
"a bully with a badge."
Lee Scott's son Eddie was
falsely arrested driving home from work at three in the
morning and jailed by
Horner's police; his truck was towed away.
Police claimed the young
man had no insurance. The next morning, no charges were filed, Eddie Scott
had insurance.
But in spite of the almost continuous aggravation and harassment
the work went on with
the Scott family and their skilled craftsmen. Lee and son Eddie often worked 12, 14, 16
hours a day,
a mountain of labor. The
building was solidly built and the exquisite baroque woodwork and
decorations for the entrance, hallway
and ceilings was re-created and each item,
high in the air, was tediously properly painted by Lee Scott’s son, Eddie, working from
aerial platforms. It was a loving labor of many months of art work.
When finished The Columbia looked and felt like the old
Columbia.
She was a splendorous and
awesome thing of beauty.
Lee Scott and his family had taken a pile of rubble and created
“a
marvelous work and a wonder.”
A new building for downtown, built with private money and hosting
300, 400, and at times over 600 people coming to the Columbia on Friday and
Saturday nights. The people came
from
the outlying suburbs, from the hills, from the hollows; many came from other
states,
but they all came with money in their pockets to see and hear the shows
and spend their money
with Lee Scott and other entertainment and food spots in
town. The Columbia was bringing
more
people into town than any other attraction and it had been done by the Scott
family with
a dream, with determination, with their money and their hard labor,
and with financial help
from many, many citizens, some were wealthy, some were
poor, but they helped rebuild the
Columbia.
Money was coming to town and the ever alert opportunistic Police Chief Charles Horner
installed
a PAY FOR POLICE PROTECTION PLAN for all merchants in the area
of the
Columbia.
It was a reasonable enough plan; if you
were in business downtown and wanted protection from busted-out windows, vandalized vehicles, assaults or robberies of your customers, and
fires in the night you didn't have to pay mobbed-up professional racketeers such as Rocco,
or Martie. All you had to do was grease
Police Chief Charles Horner's hand with Two
Hundred Dollars a month, (you could hand it to the Chief personally) and you were protected.
And, this was cheap insurance, you could not afford not to pay the premiums.
The Columbia was beautiful and she was loved by all; and crowds were coming to town to
see her, merchants were
prospering , music was playing, citizens singing and smiling.
Life was good, But somewhere some Devil was jealous; Yes, that is the
reason as all
men know, And then the Columbia was gone and was only ashes again
as an inferno swept
her away from us on November 12, 2007
According to Tony Rutherford, Huntingtonnews.net
Entertainment Editor
“The inferno began less than 24 hours after The
Portsmouth Daily Times printed an article
stating that Scott had declined to pay so-called “protection” money to
the city’s police chief.
Later, Jeff Barron, the
Times reporter who wrote the story, was dismissed by the Times for
accurately
reporting a drug transaction which a major advertiser complained.” (Glockner's Auto))
The fire burned rapidly.
The only photos of the fire were taken by Claudette Ferguson of
Moe’s
News Forum. That was great work, Claudette! You moved fast to get there in time.
No one has been charged with setting this fire. Many possible suspects have been
mentioned.
I have reason to
believe that Chief of Police Charles Horner did the job, but I may be wrong.
NOW, FIVE MORE YEARS OF LABOR LATER AND THE COLUMBIA IS OPEN
AGAIN.
THE SETTING IS DIFFERENT BUT THE
LOCATION IS STILL THE COLUMBIA.
The
Portsmouth Daily Times is connected with the Columbia
five years ago and
Publisher Michael Messerly may become
more interested.
There will be
news at the columbia that many readers
will want to see. If the Portsmouth Daily Times is
carrying
Columbia news more people will buy more papers and
every paper needs readers.
Right now
there is a powerful story to tell of the Scott
men who re-built the property not
only once, but twice.
Both times they
worked nearly five years and they did
the work with their own money. Lee Scott kept his
promise to the lady who
sold them the property.
Lee Scott hires
good craftsmen to do his skilled work
and he pays his workers better than
average wages;
he is an unique employer in this area. In nearly ten
years we have never had a
complaint from any of his
workers. Lee Scott is fair to deal with; he doesn’t
quibble over price and he does pay promptly.
Lee Scott
does buy advertising. Lee buys many
items and he pays promptly without haggling.
It appears to
some of us that perhaps Lee Scott,
after re-building the Columbia twice, in a
labor
that has taken ten years, deserves one article in
the Portsmouth Daily
Times, if only as a tribute to
his tremendous show of tenacity.
HE NEVER GAVE IN!
Mike Messerly and Lee Scott are both good at
what they
do and they will both win; together
the power would be mighty.

Portsmouth Daily Times Manager admits
discrimination against COLUMBIA

By Shawnee Sentinel
Writer Austin Leedom, Saturday, May 12, 2012.
The Columbia Music Hall is open
and has received great reviews.
But not one word of recognition
from the Portsmouth Daily Times(PDT.) Why??
It is now being reported on Moes Forum by Columbia owner Lee Scott
that both Top Reporter Frank Lewis
and General Manager Michael Messerly
have given Mr.Scott promises and
have failed to honor their promises.
If Mike Messerly has been affected
by violent threats from the local gang of
cutthroats in power here in one of
the most vicious and corrupt cities in America,
this effect is understandable and
reasonable. This is Portsmouth, Ohio,
not even a safe place to be in the daytime if you
are of age, armed and know the evil
ones who would do you harm.
News of this discrimination
against the Columbia and Lee Scott by the
Times will drop circulation for
the Times and increase attendance
at the Columbia Music Hall.

You may have read the
daring article by FRANK LEWIS in the
Portsmouth DailyTimes on April 23 about
Crispie Creme Donuts crawling with bugs.
Frank,as usual,did a good job. He is
an amazing writer; the article was long;
Frank Lewis told the whole
story and never once wrote the word "roach,"
but the readers
understood that City Solicitor Mike Jones has been running a creepy,
crawly donut business
across from the new high school, next
to the city library.
Dr. Tim Angel, a member of the Board of Health wanted to immediately
close
Solicitor Jones' donut
business down,
but Attorney George L.
Davis was able to save Mr. Jones' Crispie Creme from
instant closure.
Reporter Frank Lewis was also respectful to the members, friends and veterans of the
the United States Navy and did not mention that Crispie Creme Owner Mike Jones is an officer in the U. S. Navy and serves as an Active Reserve with the Judge Advocate Generals Staff and holds the rank of Commander.

The Council members and the Mayors
during the recent
two decades have ignored taxing hundred of millions of
dollars
in real estate belonging to their friends.
Boisterous Third Ward Councilman Nicholas Basham, and First Ward Councilman Kevin Johnson did much of the talking and were encouraged by Auditor (I know nothing!) Trent Williams and Solicitor Mike Jones. As usual I got good video recordings of the meeting; for better results I'm now using two cameras. The meeting lasted nearly three hours and few persons were happy with what happened but all were happy the meeting was finally finished.
Council President John Haas once again demonstrated his inability to
lead the council and had difficulty with understanding some of the big
words being used. (Example: "What does abstain mean?") Haas also again held a private meeting in violation of charter law. John Haas appears to have a learning disability and may
resign from his position as Council President if more meetings are like the one on Monday, May 14th, 2012.
Haas is also running as
Democratic party candidate for representative to the Ohio General Assembly
in the November election and may leave the City Council to do some
full-time campaigning against Dr. Terry Johnson the likable incumbent
Republican, a very popular man who served three tours as an Army
Doctor in the killing fields of Iran and Afghanistan, served a term as
County Coroner, and has earned great respect from local Democratic labor
leaders for his successful fight in the General Assembly defending
the rights of the working people.
